Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved.

JDRF is the leading global organization focused on T1D research. Driven by passionate, grassroots volunteers connected to children, adolescents, and adults with this disease, JDRF is the largest charitable supporter of T1D research. The goal of JDRF is to improve the lives of every person affected by T1D by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing the disease. More than 80 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education. JDRF will not rest until T1D is fully conquered.

New this year! Members of our Chapter can help accelerate the pace of diabetes research by partnering with JDRF to raise funds for the annual Gala Fund A Cure Campaign. All you have to do is set up a fundraising page, email it to your peers, and ask them to support research! To get started, please sign up by clicking the link below.

Fund A Cure is a unique opportunity to make a 100% tax-deductible donation to JDRF that will fund vital research to cure, treat, and prevent type 1 diabetes. Since 1994, JDRF has raised over $211 million through Fund A Cure alone.

It’s been ten years since our son Griffin was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and this May will be the 10th anniversary of being honored at the 2003 JDRF Promise Ball and getting involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Hard to believe 10 years have passed and Griffin has gone from a 2 and a half year old diaper wearing toddler (see side picture) to a 5 foot tall 7th grader who has quite a few opinions.

Our original campaign 10 years ago was “a one time ask”.  .

Okay we’ve asked more than once, but look at what your generosity has accomplished.  Look where we are – artificial pancreas, beta cell encapsulation and regeneration – research breakthroughs that seemed reserved for the lab only are being tested on humans; 4 clinical trials in 2002 and over 50 human clinical trials today.   A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is now a common diabetes product covered by insurance.

Griffin has had over 40,000 finger sticks. Thousands of insulin infusion set changes (and it’s a big needle).  Any illness is a threat to Griffin as type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder and it affects his entire body.

Despite research advances, Griffin has additional autoimmune diseases that often occur with type 1 diabetes. He was diagnosed with celiac disease, he has thyroid antibodies that predict future thyroid disease and heart disease remains a likely risk factor that could start to appear as early as his 20s.  Diabetes takes an awful toll on the body and JDRF funds research to help treat and prevent theses complications….but they need your help as well as ours.

We are asking again…

Here are some of the ways we have shared our experience with Diabetes with our friends.......

Please donate what you can to help us find a CURE and prevent future children from getting this disease.

"To Griffin and The King Family, Thanks for doing such a wonderful job in bringing attention to this very important cause! As you are aware, our son Riley was diagnosed a year ago at age 17. At any age, Type 1 diabetes is a brutal and relentless disease to manage for the child and the entire family and most people do not have a good understanding of how it works. Thanks to your support and that of others, I am pleased to share that Riley raised over $4,000 at his Halloween Long boarding Slide Jam for Type 1 in October. Let's continue to do what we can to support the JDRF. You are doing an amazing job, Griffin! Nancy Dodd Druger."
